Going Beyond Tradition: Advancing Agriculture With Data-Driven Insights
Abstract:
The general public still has a picture engrained of the red barn door and farmer with a pitch fork and rubber boots – Oh how things have changed! A quantum leap in innovation and investment into the agriculture space has been underway over the past 5 years from simple GPS autosteering to real time data analytics providing better insight into the primary production systems. This present wave of innovation is collecting hundreds of data points every minute at the sub-field level, structuring and providing prescriptions back to support growers in making better decisions on the 50+ variables that affect the soil, plant, the operations and the bottom-line.
The complexity of the data and the use of it to support risk management across the value chain has offered unprecedented derivative products opportunities. These complex systems of biology, chemistry, climate, equipment, sensors and the supporting infrastructure to enable better management offers a new horizon for exporting Canada’s agriculture commodity strength to knowledge based management systems the billions of arable acres across the globe.
