Design for Machine Learning and AI

Sponsored by: Detour UX & Jumping Elephants

Discover the critical role of designers in the era of the algorithm. Learn to use machine-generated content, insight, and interaction as design material in your everyday work. This lively hands-on workshop talk explores the technologies and practical techniques that you can use today—like right now—not only to make existing products better but to imagine surprising new services. Read More

Opening Remarks

By: Ryan Short, Founder & CEO, Detour UX

9:00 - 10:30

Session 1: Machine learning in everyday products

Explore how to integrate machine learning into your current products and your day-to-day design practice. You'll learn five key applications of machine learning, as well as four new questions that machine learning can answer for your company and your customers.

By: Josh Clark, Founder & Principal, Big Medium

10:50 - 12:20

Session 2: Tools you can use today

Discover the accessible, inexpensive services you can use today—with the skills you already have— to begin working with machine-learning smarts in your design work right now. These services reveal the ingredients you can work with as you craft next-generation interfaces. We'll explore these services together in a hands-on session that lets you start to understand their texture—what they're good at... and not so good at. The session concludes with new techniques for rapidly imagining machine-learning applications that are organic to the customer journey.

By: Josh Clark, Founder & Principal, Big Medium

Lunch & Networking

13:20 - 14:50

Session 3: Working with the grain of machine learning

Every design material has strengths and weaknesses that suggest the way it should be used. This session explores the unique texture of machine learning—and the implications it has on the technique and perspective that designers must bring to their work. Because machine learning systems are probabilistic, and because they’re based on data of varying quality, these systems sometimes deliver conclusions that are nonsensical, wrong, biased, or even dangerous. Learn how to sharpen user expectations for a system’s accuracy and capability through cues of language, interaction, and presentation. And crucially, explore design patterns that properly treat machine learning's probabilistic results as signals, not facts.

By: Josh Clark, Founder & Principal, Big Medium

 14:50 - 15:10

Afternoon Networking Break

15:10 - 16:40

Session 4: Design principles for working with A.I.

For all the opportunity of machine learning and A.I., there are plenty of ways things could go sideways. What can we do to avoid or fix problems of biased algorithms, echo chambers, surveillance capitalism, loss of work, or loss of agency as the machines take over more and more tasks? This session explores how to make sure we engage responsibly with the technology—by crafting actionable design principles that guide how we craft our products today and in the future.
